Award amounts will be determined based on applicants’ proposals, with a maximum award of $2,000 award. Applicants are encouraged to combine this travel grant with other funding resources to meet the full cost of travel, if needed. 

Recipients must submit a brief, one-page report detailing the visit activities, contacts and outcomes to the Buffett Institute upon completed use of the award funds.

Applicants may also review Northwestern University on the Fulbright alumni database for additional peer-to-peer connections. 

The grant is open to full-time faculty (tenure-line or clinical/instructional) who are interested in pursuing a U.S. Fulbright Scholar Award for work in any geographic region or discipline during the 2026–2027 or 2027–2028 Fulbright application cycles. Applicants should understand their departmental responsibilities and ability to engage in a Fulbright award during the intended cycle prior to applying for this award. 

Successful applicants will have identified a program and/or country of interest for a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program Award and demonstrate how this travel grant will benefit their application. For example, applicants may plan to use this grant to travel and meet with potential research collaborators or hosts in a country of interest, and the travel may be tied to other scholarly activities such as conference attendance. 

For the 2025 application window, preference will be given to applicants who intended to apply for a 2026–2027 award and who have not previously received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program Award.
