Julie Anne Friend is the Director for Northwestern Buffett’s Office of Global Safety and Security. In this role, Julie leads her time in applying university-wide approach to international travel risk management for students, faculty and staff. Julie came to Northwestern from Michigan State University (MSU), where her scholarship and advocacy related to U.S. Department of State travel advisories contributed to the development of standards in the field. Julie continues to publish regularly to promote best practices in travel health and safety. Her seminal work, Responding to the Death of a Student Abroad, is currently being updated to address the increased diversity of the university’s traveling community. Julie earned a JD in Law and an MA in English from MSU as well as a BS in Speech Communication from Syracuse University. In her free time, Julie plays the upright bass in a local bluegrass band called The Smiletones.
