Northwestern Buffett Faculty Appointments
Faculty appointments at Northwestern Buffett are a way to create strong connections between Northwestern Buffett and Northwestern academic units, and to catalyze collaborative, multidisciplinary work that addresses global challenges. By building a community of faculty from across academic disciplines we aim to deepen Northwestern’s capacity for global research and engagement.
Appointments take the form of 50% positions at Northwestern Buffett for an initial five year term. The faculty member’s tenure home remains in the partnering department, which also carries the remaining appointment. Appointments at Northwestern Buffett are renewable for additional terms. Initial joint appointments are for external hires and priority is given to senior positions. Appointees are expected to substantively contribute to Northwestern Buffett’s initiatives.
Ideal candidates for joint faculty appointments engage in research, teaching and public engagement that address global challenges. They catalyze interdisciplinary collaborations at Northwestern and international connections, and they help advance Northwestern’s global strategic priorities.
Opportunities for joint faculty appointments can be proposed by academic units at any time. Northwestern Buffett also, via its Global Council, once a year extends to all Northwestern academic units an open invitation for exploratory discussions regarding joint faculty appointments. We expect academic units to collaborate with Northwestern Buffett throughout the entire process, from jointly identifying opportunity spaces and establishing candidate selection criteria, to selecting and evaluating candidates. Later stage opportunities will be considered on an ad hoc basis.
