Fulbright U.S. Scholar Pre-Application Travel Grant

This travel grant provides Northwestern faculty members funding to visit international partners and collaborators abroad in advance of applying for a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program Award

Offered by the Northwestern Buffett Institute, this grant is designed to support faculty members in developing or strengthening their Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program Award applications. Explore opportunities to teach, conduct research or carry out professional projects abroad through Fulbright in the 2024 25 awards cycle .  

 Another aim of this award is to build a robust Fulbright community at Northwestern, which reflects the University’s commitment to making positive, cross-cultural and sustaining impact through global engagement. Apply for the grant

Award amount will be determined based on the applicant’s budgeted proposal. This fund is $10,000 and multiple grants may be awarded. 

Recipients must submit a one-page report detailing the visit activities and outcomes to Northwestern Buffett upon completed use of the award funds. 

Recipients will also be asked to work with Anahit Gomtsian, Associate Director for Faculty Recognition and Awards and Special Projects, on their Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program Award application as part of this grant. Anahit provides administrative support for faculty applications to prestigious honors and awards, including the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program. 

The grant is open to full-time faculty (tenure-line or clinical instructional) who are interested in pursuing a U.S. Fulbright Scholar Award for work in any geographical region or discipline. Preference will be given to candidates who wish to apply in 2023 for a 2024–25 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program Award.

Successful applicants for this travel grant will have identified a program and/or country of interest for a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program Award and will, for example, plan to use this grant to travel and meet with potential research collaborators or hosts in the country of interest. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate how this travel grant will benefit their Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program Award application. 

Applicants who have not yet identified a program or country of interest are encouraged to review the awards list, visit a Fulbright Office Hour and/or schedule a meeting with Anahit Gomtsian in Northwestern’s Office of Administration and Planning prior to applying for this grant. Applicants may also review Northwestern University on the Fulbright alumni database for additional peer-to-peer connections. 

Applications are due by March 15, 2023. A committee organized by Northwestern Buffett will decide on awards and notify applicants in advance of Northwestern’s Fulbright Week, which will take place during April 10–14, 2023. Applicants must complete this Northwestern Buffett application.
