Call for Proposals: China Cluster

About this opportunity

The China cluster aims to promote rigorous empirical research understanding the drivers and constraints of economic and institutional development, including topics related to demography, geography/climate/environment, political economy, economic history, growth, productivity, corporate finance, and banking.


This Call for Proposals is open to all Northwestern University faculty and doctoral students traveling to China for exploratory projects.


This grant awards small travel grants up to $5,000.

The cluster can arrange the visit to be hosted by existing partners in China, or the applicant can work with his/her own existing partners. In the case of the latter, the applicant should state the partner’s contact information in the application.

Proposal requirements:

  • One-page research proposal, explaining the general area of research interest and the activities that the researcher will conduct in China (e.g., study institutional details, collect data, work with Chinese collaborator, etc.)
  • Preliminary timeline
  • Budget
