Center for Forced Migration Studies (CFMS)

The Center for Forced Migration Studies (CFMS) at the Buffett Institute for Global Studies seeks to contribute to our understanding of refugee protection through research, documentation, education and public outreach concerning the condition and realities of refugee movement across state borders to avoid the risk of harm and settlement in host countries, the underlying social disfranchisement, and the international community's response to refugee needs.

  • ResearchBy conducting multidisciplinary research on refugee settlement and alternative approaches in refugee hosting contexts to expand our understandings of the long-term impacts and realities of ‘protection,’ the impact of policy and potential of new technologies.
  • DocumentationBy creating a database to increase access to primary information and empirical data on refugee settlement and to develop new approaches, strategies, and resources to document country conditions.
  • Education: By providing learning and training opportunities for students, academics, policy makers, practitioners, and refugees, we prepare the next generation of scholars, practitioners and activists.
  • OutreachBy contributing to the formation of refugee policies, fostering dialogue through networking and raising public awareness, we cultivate engagement, publication, and partnerships.
  • Donate: Our research and programs are made possible through grants and donations.
