Northwestern Buffett Institute for Global Affairs

Globalizing Northwestern

Together, we amplify Northwestern's global engagement.

Northwestern Buffett develops, aligns and champions Northwestern University’s global strategy and engagement. We bring together students, faculty and experts from across the University and around the world to learn from one another and collaboratively address critical global challenges.

Northwestern Buffett's Role

In partnership with the University’s schools, institutes and centers, as well as regional and global partners, Northwestern Buffett works to amplify Northwestern’s engagement across the world. Our work builds on a signature Northwestern strength: our broad excellence across many disciplines and collaborative culture. This allows us to field truly excellent multidisciplinary research teams to address the greatest global challenges.

Our Executive Director Annelise Riles (also Associate Provost for Global Affairs) also has been tasked by University Leadership with leading Northwestern’s Global Strategic Planning process to help bring over 10 years of global strategic planning at the University to a fruitful conclusion. Through this process, Northwestern Buffett has become the coordinator for the University’s global strategy in order to foster alignment and multiply the impact of other globalization efforts taking place in Northwestern’s schools and units under one defining vision.

Global Strategy

More than 200 Northwestern faculty, staff, students and alumni have engaged in the planning process to help develop the Northwestern Global Strategic Plan.

The plan serves to articulate university-wide priorities and set a course for action and impact. We are not starting from scratch, but rather building on a decade of extensive work across the University, amplifying our remarkable achievements and stellar global reputation in numerous fields. The process has been the foundation for development of shared goals and a clear strategy for our next phase of growth.

Explore our Global Efforts

In its administrative capacity, Northwestern Buffett is staffed to support integration with Northwestern’s global agenda. Our new organizational structure ensures that global research, global learning, and services for our international students, scholars, and faculty are strategically aligned. Like most units that are part of the Office of the Provost, Northwestern Buffett supports university-wide efforts by engaging the full range of university stakeholders.
